From now on, I am interested to learn cyber security field. Since I was applying for this course in scholarship of master’s degree enrollment. I learnt a little more about this aspect and found it was so prospectus for my future career. Furthermore, I am a web developer with limited knowledge of computer security.

By taking this course, I believe I can improve my current skill and complete it with cyber security. I didn’t care when my first attempt at the scholarship failed. Going ahead to apply it the second time and I also don’t care if it falls again. I really love this subject and plan to learn it for a long time.

Based on what I got from my study of cyber security, I think everyone needs this knowledge, particularly folks who are interested in IT. In this post, I am gonna show you what you need to start in cyber security.

  1. Mastering the Programming Languages
Some of you probably will leave this article because the opening is so annoying. But, the programming language is the foundation of this subject. How would we build a strong house without building a strong foundation early? Absolutely, your house would be collapsed. This also happens in cyber security, we plan to secure the system, so we also need logical thinking first to support our knowledge in problem-solving. If you ask me, what programming language do you need in cyber security field? I just follow the experts and recommend you to learn Python. I am also starting to learn this programming language now. Then, we know Python as a scripting language, so we need to master a compiled language, you can choose Golang for this one.
  2. Do You Need a Degree?
Well, if you need to get a job in cyber security, perhaps the degree or certifications will help you a lot. But, when you apply for the company or even the job list in LinkedIn, you need to show your portfolios or CV. This is needed as real proof that you already are mastering your job. So, it is better to experience a little more in cyberspace and know how to secure it than only having just a certificate. I mean the formal degree is not necessary.
  3. Do Some Training in Cyber Security
You can start with simple tasks like PicoCTF which is totally free and provide some explanation of cyber security. This website teaches you how to be a knowledgeable person in cyber security. Furthermore, this is absolutely for the beginner, designing to build your chops slowly. After PicoCTF, you can try Hack The Box as an advanced lesson. It gives you the lesson from easy to the most difficult level. New content is available every week so that you will be able to get to know the latest exploits and vulnerabilities. Also, you need to explore the other websites to give you various information on cyber security, Try Hack Me for instance.
  4. Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP) Certification
This is an ethical hacking certification Offensive Security that teaches penetration testing methodologies and the use of the tools included with the Kali Linux distribution. But, before trying this examination, you highly recommend getting to know about Operating Systems and to be familiar with Linux OS first. Then, exploring the security+, the entry-level cyber security credential offered by non-profit trade association CompTIA.

That’s all the requirements for your strong foundation in learning cybersecurity. If you found a better method than the above article, share your thoughts in the comment below.
